“Fed Ex Panda Express”

On Tai Shan — via NPR: “He’s not the first panda to be FedExed; the company brought Tai Shan’s parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, to the United States in 2000. Nor will he be traveling alone — Mei Lan, a 3-year-old panda from Atlanta, will be sharing the flight.”

  1. It is good that there is a strong effort to protect pandas, they are very endangered with only about 2,000 individuals left in the wild, their population numbers are so low because of deforestation of their habitat and poaching. Fossils found throughout Asia show that about 500,000 years ago they were found throughout most of Eastern Asia.

  2. For me personally I think it is very curious to know that a animal in warning of instinction such as the panda can be still roaming around the world safely. This also may open oportunities for people that are not that good economically to have a chance to see such beauty and experince it.

  5. Wow! this is amazing, I never had thought that animal could be Fedexed! I like the fact that the panda won’t be sent alone. They should keep them together not only because they are a family but because pandas are going extinct and they should keep them safe.

    • This “FedExPandaExpress” also helped a China to improve international relationships (diplomacy):

“Loans of giant pandas to American and Japanese zoos formed an important part of the diplomacy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the 1970s, as it marked some of the first cultural exchanges between the PRC and the West. This practice has been termed “Panda diplomacy”.”

  11. I dont think it is a smart decision to fedex an animal because they are use to the climate in which they live and that drastic change of climates in my opinion, could harm the animals health causing them to die quicker and become extinct faster.

    • The Fed Ex of a Panda is a solution to a very delicate problem: they don’t reproduce. For some reason, Pandas are very shy when it comes to reproduction—especially when they are in captivity. The Chinese have not been very successful in breeding Pandas. Fortunately, Zoos around the world—especially in San Diego, California—have had some success with breeding techniques. Fed exing Pandas allows for the baby Pandas to return to their country of origin. Remember: Pandas are loaned by the Chinese government to international zoos.

  12. this fed ex of pandas is very strange and its weird that they don’t get harmed while being in fed ex. They should always reproduce even if they’re shy cause pandas are beautiful and amazing creatures and even if they’re harmful or not they shouldn’t get extinct. check out this link http://blog.van.fedex.com/panda-express here they fedexed two pandas to the Toronto Zoo and its the first time since 1985 that they have pandas in that zoo. :O hahaha niiice. bye

  13. its important to protect the species such as these due to their limit in its population. it makes me really happy to see that FedEx had done that to protect this organism. this could give hope for a population expantion to this species.

    • That’s why zoos are so controversial; animals suffer a great deal in badly administered ones; on the other hand, they can actually offer a lot of help, the San Diego Zoo in California is such a case. Their Pandas are in great shape and they have helped a lot in the preservation of these mammals.

    • Very sad indeed. Lets hope that our grandchildren can be able to see Pandas and Polar bears as well—they are highly endangered and there is a great chance that they become extinct in the next few decades.

  16. I dont know i feel bad for these poor animals… They acually fedex them , imena i know they are trying to keep the race living , but something is just kind of wierd here not no metion that most of the people that acually transport them dont actually care about the animals just the keepers. It would be really sad to see them extinct . Ireally hope they mate and the numbers may increase

  18. I didn’t know that animals could be FedEx. Since they don’t want to mate, scientists should find a way so they do, so they can survive. I love pandas and I don’t want them to go extinct.

  21. I have mixed fellings about this post because I really don”t like to see animals being taken away from their natural habitat but in this case i know it is to help the species survive so I guess I should be happy about that. I just hope they don”t become extinct since they are beautiful animals and that people keep protecting their habitats and scientists find a way to make them reproduce faster.

  22. The transport of animals like this panda can be extremely dangerous to some countries. The import of wild animals can cause an drastic changer in the environment. This new animals can unbalance the environmental homeostasis in a country, since it can kill native animals or plants. This transport has also a positive side since new species can be taken to other countries for further studies and labs. I believe that animals should be kept in their natural habitat not removed nor transported to another place.

    • It is a rather complicated matter, panda preservation. On one hand, you have that pandas are: national symbols, sacred animals, & great tools for publicity. So this means that the Chinese get to promote their culture, while getting help from other countries (it does not look bad when countries work together; and China needs to show the world that they can play nice).

On the other, which is your point, Josué, animals should not be out of their habitats. Especially not for exhausting media tours around the world.

But, one thing is for certain, pandas are seriously threatened, and the Chinese need all the help they can get from the international community.
