LUX AETERNA (Vila, 2013)

The following video is a 3D animation, in short film form, by the spanish artist Cristóbal Vila. It tells the epic story of light; how it reaches our planet after a journey that spans the cosmos. Via io9 and LUX AETERNA on Vimeo

    • Very good. The short film actually wants to tell a story. “LUX AETERNA” means “eternal light” in latin; and if we actually think about it in scientific terms: light is energy, and energy is, to some extent, eternal.

  1. This is a great piece of art, it has so much detail that it is hard to believe that it was all done with Computer-Generated Art, the title is also very clever because Lux Aeterna means Eternal light in the Latin language and it makes sense because all of the light that has and is being emitted by stars will continue to travel for millions of years. If you look up at the stars, most of what you will see is not how stars are today it is how they were 150,000 years ago and if you were near those stars and you would look back at the Sun you would see how the Sun looked a long time ago.

  3. Discovery Channel’s slogan: “The World is Just Awesome” comes perfect to this video. It’s astonishing how a simple thing like light is, to make such an impact here on Earth. That is why light is the base for all life here on earth.

    • Awe inspiring indeed. Remember what we talked about in class about being amazed by nature, and that scientists and artists alike share this very important capacity for amazement? LUX AETERNA does just that–the video allows for the viewer to be amazed; and we are all humans–scientists, artists, etc.–, so that means that we all have the same capacity for amazement, we just have to give ourselves the chance to me amazed. Forget about cynicism just for a day, that should be enough to find new sources for amazement.

  4. besides the obvious translation to eternal light, this video was very good it showed the huge journey that light takes, everywhere it goes, how it looks and how it moves but something i especially liked about this is that is shows how light interacts with its surroundings creating a beautiful picture..

  6. I wonder how the Sun, an object we take for granted actually drives all life processes on Earth. The sunlight drives photosynthesis on algae and plants creating the base for our food chain. The picture of light passing through the prism shows you how light has different components that we know as visible spectrum. Different components of photosynthesis depend on different components of the light spectrum to make the chemical reactions happen.

    • Isaac Newton broke down the belief that light was pure and white–a 1,500 year old belief proposed by Athenian philosopher Aristotle. The field of quantum mechanics was born. Now light could be measured. This means that we have a better understanding on what light is: a strange (and eternal) phenomenom that has made life posible on Earth.

  7. The title “Lux Aeterna” is very fitting, it in itself describes the potential and infinite distance light can travel. The same way the video shows to all the amazing place light comes from and can reach from that far away point or simply travel in space eternally.

  9. Simply beautiful. And to know that light is infinite (or at least as far as we know ) is just wonderful. I say it because as we all know light is energy and energy runs basically everything we know plants, animals, electronics, etc.

  11. It’s amazing how a person can say so much yet so little. The story is beautifully constructed and well thought out. The way the creator demonstrated the story of light was extremely poetic and I think the music added a lot to the purpose of the video.
