Animals of Reddit.

Reddit.com is referred to as the “front page of the internet”; meaning that anything worth a look at on the web ends up here, before it even reaches conventional media (newspapers, TV, etc.). Most of the memes that appear on your Facebook wall, or on your Twitter timeline, have their origins here. Reddit caters to the taste of almost everyone. There are sections (subreddits) that manage a lot of multimedia: videos, text (news articles), and photos. This large community has gained world wide attention; including the POTUS (President of The United States, Barack Obama). Thus, to have a proper idea of the role of the Internet during the first decade of the 21st Century, reddit cannot be ignored.

In this post I will share images taken from the subreddit of photos (r/pics). This 14 picture gallery will show pics of animals from various phyla: chordates (amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles), cnidarians (jellyfish), molluks (squids), etc. Some of the images display rare behavioral traits of animals:

The Snake and The Dragonfly. Both animals are predators.

Many more images, just as remarkable as these ones, are uploaded daily. They give us a glimpse of the wonderful biodeversity in the animal kingdom–this biodiversity is another piece of evidence that accounts for the success of animals. Suggestions for the growth of this gallery are welcome. Don’t forget to put the hyperlink in the comment section of the post. I expect this gallery to grow with your input (remember to name the animal as well).

  1. It rely is amazing how all these animals have two things in common. They are the most beautiful wild animal there are and at the same time they are the most dangerous.

    • Animals are multicelular and heterotrophic; which allows them to be more complex and better adapted. You are invited to look for other images of animals that can be added to this gallery.

  3. All these animals are so beautiful and intriguing but what surprises me the most is the chicken embryo. Also, what does that small bat eat?

    • The small bat—probably the smallest mammal in the world—eats small fruit and insects. Also, if you find pictures that can be added to the gallery, you can submit them to this comment section.

  5. omg these photos are amazing! I had never heard of the bumble bee bat, it is so small and cute and the colors of the snakes are gorgeous and vivid and it can sure tell us they are poisonous!

    • Imagine millions of years of genetic shuffling—basically, mutations. Trillions of these mutations, over millions of years; mutations that are an advantage for the organism are preserved. That, in a nutshell, is how we get bumblebee bats and regal ring snakes.

  6. Is amazing how much beauty there are in animals. Animals are such beautiful creatures and should never be disturbed in there natural habitat.

  7. It is extraordinary to see the unknown varities and beauty in all animals, I think it is wonderful for a species of animals to have unique characteritics. It is intresting how all vertebrates have the same skeleton structure, and yet most animals look very different. The animals from the pictures of reddit are fascinating, but I have always wondered how different the world may be if all animals had the same intelligence of human.

    • In nature whatever works is iterated, repeated, preserved. So, bones and their architecture in vertebrates have proven to be a very efficient biological and evolutionary milestone.

I believe that ‘intelligence’ is as complicated to describe as ‘love’, ‘art’, ‘poetry’, etc. But we sure know how to identify it, even when its meaning is, at times, frustratingly elusive. This said, I belive that intelligence is out there in the animal kingdom. Ours is not the only form that exists. Maybe we would be better off if we could identify other types and sources of intelligence.

      • Im pretty sure that there are organisms far more intelligent than us. Maybe not in this planet but on another galaxy! Maybe were a science fair project of 594th grade alien student at another galaxy! Who knows?

  8. i think its very beautiful how animals interact in their own habitat and the resources that they need to use to survive in this world. Its interesting the fact that there are different kinds of frogs(very rare frogs) some that I’ve never even heard of like the milk frog!

  9. honestly i wouldn’t get close to these animals but they have attractive colors. like the snake for me the colors say “come and play” haha cause its color are really awesomeee ! of course i wouldn’t get too close but id throw pictures if i had the chance and if they don’t try to attack me first. http://www.smashinglists.com/15-beautiful-but-deadly-animals/ in this link it also shows you beautiful but deadly creatures !!!!!!! check it outttt its preeettty cool :p

  10. its hard to imagine what these animals were before they evolved to this stage in there species…its kinda weird thinking that at one point, dragon flies were huge and chickens came from the mighty t-rex but something i dream of seeing but never will is what they will become or what we will become…

  13. Its amazing how these animals can be so physically different to us, yet we think the same! Our similarities to the gorilla amazes me in every way possible.

  14. I love the picture with the gorilla. Like Jorge said, it amazes me too the relationship between the human and the wild animal. We see them so different to us but they’re really similar to we humans.

  15. We humans may think that we may be smarter or more advanced that most animals in the world but I dont see why we should be like that. We arguably can’t change color or eat in the ocean and then eat someone else at land! I think some animals are more advanced than us!

    • We have a great brain. But that does not mean that having a great brain is the only way to be remarkable in nature. Many animals display adaptations and evolutionary milestones that deem them worthy of our appreciation.

  16. the sea lions, they seem very powerful as said in the picture. Are they some of the most powerful animals on the sea?

    • Sea Lions have very powerful jaws. They are excellent predators. But in polar areas, I believe the Polar Bear and the Orca are at the top of the food chain in their respective ecological niches.

  17. It is amazing what animals are capable of, no matter how innocent the animal looks it can be far more powerful than we think.. like the polar bear, we think they are fluffy and cute but in reality they are vicious predators

  18. These photos are amazing. I especially like the lion with the scars. It shows the battle wounds and what that lion had to go through to maintain his position. Also caught my attention the regal ring snake and its vibrant colors. The colors act as a warning for other animals telling them to stay away. I also liked the milk frog. The contrasting color in the skin and mouth caught my eye in a fascinating manner.

  21. Something else that caught my attention is how the organs or body parts of animals can adapt so they can survive. An example is the eyes of the owl that allows them to see great at night, the venom of a snake, the shell of a turtle, and the powerful jaws of the sea lion and the polar bear.

    • Do a Google search of the words «270 degrees», «Owl vertebrae». You will find a series of recent and interesting articles about the adaptation that allows owls to turn their heads so dramatically.

  23. The colors that these animals have are very amazing. You can easily tell that they are poisonous just because of the bright colors, they protect the animal from predators. We have very few things in common with these animals but its amazing that they think just like us and have common sense. 🙂

  24. The most interesting pictures for me were the ones of the human with the gorilla and the chicken embryo. What amazes me is how they actually got to capture the picture inside an embryo. Also, I think it’s suprising to see how much gorillas and humans do have in common with each other.

    • I have to say that the picture of the Gorilla and the human is quite amazing. A lo of emotion in that picture. If I’m not mistaken, the Gorilla in the picture was recently orphaned. A sad but beautiful picture.

    • Nice. Great contribution. Predatory animals have to consume a lot of food. Their nutrition is meat-based; there’s not too much energetic value in their diets. They need to eat many times during a 24 hour day.

Its like men and women don’t seem to be interested except it is one thing to do with Girl gaga! Your own stuffs nice. Always care for it up! 28. I really liked this post. All of the photos were amazing, my favorite one is the one with the jellyfish and the turtle and the most shocking was the one that the pinguin is being torn apart by the sea lion. It is incredible to see how through evolution there is so much variety and how each animal adapts for its environment and their body has adaptations to help them survive for example the owl’s eyesight and how much it can turn its’ head. All the time there are new species of animals being found and here you can see this: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24326-gleaming-beetle-one-of-60-new-species-in-suriname.html#.UlBnj1AnV8E
